As citizens of Switzerland, a country with a tradition of pacifism and neutrality, we join the appeals of thousands of people around the world, the appeals of the humanitarian organisations in Palestine and the request expressed in the letter that Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders sent on 1 December 2023 to Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis, Head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA), echoed in the appeal of Stephen Cornish, General Director of MSF Switzerland, in the "open letter" published by "La Regione" on 07.12.2023: "We did everything we could. Remember us”. Could these few words, written by an MSF doctor on the blackboard of a Gaza hospital, prompt us to reflect on the horrors that accompany the deluge of information we receive every day, and to take action to stop them? It’s time to mobilise all of us, especially political representatives and governments, to protest and demand an immediate and lasting ceasefire in Gaza. It is time to stop the indiscriminate and incessant attacks, the displacements, the attacks on hospitals and medical personnel, the siege and the restrictions on the distribution of humanitarian aid. It is time to reclaim our common humanity, our support for peace and our aversion to war. We can still prevent Gaza from turning into a cemetery. This recurring event, in which the magic of cinema blends with the experience of the urban space, is the result of an insight by the renowned architect Livio Vacchini, who custom-designed the specific projection structures for the city square, characterised by their iconic reticular structure. The screen and projection booth, which have been adapted over time to technological developments with intelligence and respect for the original design, are essential elements of the ephemeral architecture that, year after year, brings this exceptional urban spectacle to life in the city devoted to cinema. They convey the values that define the Locarno Film Festival, the city of Locarno, modern Ticino architecture and Swiss film culture, and constitute a unique example in Switzerland and beyond.  Unfortunately, for economic and logistical reasons, the Locarno Film Festival has decided to “retire the screen”, opting instead for generic systems, sacrificing its rich architectural culture.  While understanding the complexity of the challenges the Locarno Film Festival must face, we ask:  • that the Locarno Film Festival preserves and enhances the screen and projection booth designed by Livio Vacchini by continuing to use them for screenings in Piazza Grande; • that municipal, cantonal and federal authorities protect the film screenings in Piazza Grande during the Locarno Film Festival, as well as the projection structures specifically developed by architect Livio Vacchini; • that transparency, participation and public debate be ensured in the future regarding decisions that have a significant impact on the Festival, particularly concerning its cultural role and identity values.   The petition has been signed by the following twenty people from the film, culture, architecture and heritage protection sectors. Casa Jam è testimone d’importanti mutamenti economici, sociali e culturali di fine Ottocento. Si tratta di una villetta con tratti liberty, entro un parco cintato, di tre piani, con fronti indifferenziate a falso timpano costruita nel 1911. La zona antistante, in parte appartenente al mappale della villa, è costituita da un avvallamento del Riale di Moleno e riva prativa con parti a vigna e alberi da frutto da salvaguardare. È segnalata di rilievo e da proteggere nell’inventario ISOS.   Visto il pregio e l'importanza della villa chiediamo al comune di: • impedire lo sfruttamento edilizio sconsiderato e scellerato del patrimonio storico e culturale rappresentato da Casa Jam (mappale no. 136 RFD), applicando tutti gli strumenti legislativi disponibili, alla domanda di costruzione che minaccia villa e parco; • inserire Casa Jam ed il suo parco tra i beni da tutelare a livello comunale; • avviare trattative per l’acquisto (o permuta) di Casa Jam da parte della Città di Bellinzona; • valorizzare Casa Jam, (con restauro edificio principale, annessi, fontana e parco) trasformandola, p. es., nella sede del nuovo archivio storico della città, di una biblioteca comunale e un luogo per esposizioni e socializzazione, a servizio della popolazione!
